As part of SHAPE events—regional gatherings organized by the Global Shapers Community to deliver meaningful learning experiences that reinforce the Community’s mission—from 14 – 16 November, 200 young changemakers from across the African continent came together at SHAPE Africa 2024 to discuss pressing issues facing the continent with the largest youth population and its path forward.
Platforms like the Global Collaboration Village can be game-changers in enabling global connection and collaboration. By leveraging its immersive and inclusive platform, the Village overcame geographical barriers to foster action-oriented dialogue, cross-sectoral engagement, and multi-generational exchange, helping position Africa as a player in emerging technologies.
Bringing key stakeholders across the continent:
Although the event was held in Ethiopia, the Village facilitated the participation of experts from diverse fields, including aerospace, space science, and agritech, in panels focused on space innovation and agriculture. Leveraging the Village’s co-presence capabilities—a simulation of physical presence in the same space—high-level leaders from various locations engaged in open, cross-industry dialogues, fostering collaboration opportunities across sectors.
Empowering voices of youth:
Building on the Village’s close relationships with the Global Shapers Community, the Village served as a key platform with the Climate Tipping Points Hub, enabling remote members of the Global Shaper Community to actually contribute to, rather than just observe, the session by adding local perspectives through their own voices. Verbleibende Zeit 0:481x At SHAPE Africa 2024, the Climate Tipping Points Hub used immersive technology to visualize the impacts of surpassing 1.5°C, empowering changemakers to tackle Africa’s climate challenges.
A platform to discuss the future of Africa in emerging technologies:
Together with local partners, the Village team brought regional leaders together to explore what it means for Africa to lead in emerging technologies. Key discussions raised the need to transition from tech consumers to creators, highlighting the role of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution as an idea hub for decision-makers to align on a collective approach on the global stage.
